Avs players at the WCH

Avs players at the WCHA complete overview of Avalanche players that played at the IIHF World Championship.

Avalanche players began appearing at the World Championship in bigger numbers during the post-lockout era. Although several Avs players played at the WCH even during the pre-lockout era, it was mostly only for a couple of games, when the tournament was nearing its end. Let’s take a closer look at who played at the tournament, when they played and what did they won. The statistics only include those Avalanche players, who played at least one game for Colorado and were a part of the team during the tournament.

Interesting facts

  • A total of 29 players played for their countries at the WCH
  • 13 of those players have won a medal
  • Only four of those players have won gold (Forsberg, Reinprecht, Varlamov and Landeskog)
  • Jonas Holos played at the most World Championships (6 in total), followed by a couple of players that played at three, who will be surpassed by Duchene this year (since this will be his fourth time)
  • In 2013, Joe Sacco won bronze as Team USA’s head coach
  • Holos has played the most international games with 41, followed by Stastny, who’s appeared in 25 games
  • Stastny’s by far the best Colorado scorer at the WCH – he has the most points (32), goals (14) and assists (18)
  • Holos holds the lead in penalty minutes (22 PIM), while Johnson racked up 20 PIMs during his only WCH in 2013
  • Holos has also recorded the most shots (97)
  • Varlamov’s lost only one of 11 games and is currently the only Avs goalie to win gold at the tournament
  • Berra, Budaj and Aebischer were the only goalies besides Varlamov to appear at the WCH
