MacKinnon's pair of assists, Berra lost

MacKinnon's pair of assists, Berra lostEurolanche brings you the daily recap of everything important that happened at the World Championship in Belarus involving Avalanche players.

Yet another Avalanche duo was in action at the World Championship, as Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon and Switzerland’s Reto Berra both played today.

Today’s clear-cut favorites were the group A-leading Canadians, who played against underdog Italy. Team Canada didn’t go soft on the Italians, scoring 6 goals in the process of getting the obligatory win, although the match wasn’t as easy from the get go. The Italians weren’t ready to make things easy for Canada and only allowed one goal in the first period. The remaining two periods were a whole different story and Canada won even though they didn’t play their best.

Nathan MacKinnon had an ice-time of 18 minutes and 19 and totaled 6 shots on goals. He ended the game with 2 assists and a plus-minus rating of +2. His first assist came on Cody Hodgson’s goal, the second one on Brayden Schenn’s tally.

Canada – Italy 6:1 (1:0, 4:0, 1:1)

Reto Berra and his countrymen faced Finland. Switzerland was down 2-0 through 2 periods, but came back after Reto Suri cut the Finns’ lead to one after 2 minutes of play in the third and Roman Josi tied the game with 3 minutes remaining. Both goalies then kept the puck out of their nets and weren’t beaten even in overtime. The Finns got the win in the shootout, the only successful shooter being Finland’s Iiro Pakarinen.
